Click on the video of the protest( not strike) that Dr Chee organized.
It made me think a lot.
About where we stand as a nation. From the eyes of a Singaporean.
My australian friend Ben told me once that democracy itself can never be achieved, it is beautiful no doubt; but the true beauty lies in the fact that humans are always in pursue of it, forever and ever and that's where the satisfaction lies in.
The whole notion of Democracy is very beautiful. As the wall behind the political structure of a any country, I imagine it to create a wonderful place where people get to breathe freely, without Big Brother breathing down their necks 24/7.
You know. Free Market. Freedom of speech. Equality to a certain extent.I searched dictionary.com for the literal meaning and this is what I got:
1.government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
2.a state having such a form of government: The United States and Canada are democracies.
3.a state of society characterized by formal equality of rights and privileges.
4.political or social equality; democratic spirit.
5.the common people of a community as distinguished from any privileged class; the common people with respect to their political power.
I mean seriously speaking, do you think America as the most democratic place that we know is truly democratic? Seriously, what is democracy? Do you even care about what type of political structure your country is enforcing upon?
I really am worried about Singapore.
In a country where the population stands at 4 million, only a handful bothers about ideals.
The thing is, I am worried about them because whatever they are doing certainly does not have an impact on the system. The action itself is portrayed to be juvenile.
In fact, if I had not surfed the net, I would not have known nor realised what really happened during the supposed "strike" that Dr. Chee organized.
I mean, you know, online they call him an international hero, but I think, in our eyes, his "heroic" sense has degraded to that of a mad person.
His idealistic calls for "Democracy Now" and " Freedom" are seen by people as laughable ideals.
Why is this so? Why is the local print media painting such a ludicrous picture of him?
What exactly happened?
Is he truly mad?
Or is the local news painting a pseudo reality of him?
Or rather, why? Who?
Or is there some hidden conspiracy?
We wouldn't know, would we.
We know more about Thailand's politcal situation than our own. Isn't it ironic?
It's so unfair.
The local newspapers are powerful tools. For every single piece of article, there is different alternative views to it. It does not paint reality, it paints the reality through the eyes of the journalist, through the eyes of the authority controlling the journalist. In a sense, there will never be an unadulterated view of reality, there will never be truth. We are merely interpreting whatever someone is writing, interpreting.
Ok, that was some digression about local media. Poosh.
Despite the fact that I do not agree with some of the things that local media do, I have to concur on the fact that I think Dr Chee is not an " international hero" too.
More like a "jia chou wai yang" Singaporean rebel.
Hello lah, going overseas to complain about your own country is not a very smart way of achieving the agenda that you want , can?
Making yourself bankrupt is not a very smart way of fighting against authority, can?
Don't get me wrong, I am not against whatever he's doing.
I am just against the means with which he is trying to achieve.
At least he cares.
Haha.My review of the video would be that, it has painted an alternative view of what local media is trying to portray. Instead of telling me how much time is spent checking whether there are bombs on garbage truck. This is what i need! This is FOOD FOR THOUGHT! THIS WILL BRING LIFE TO THE POLITICAL SCENE OF SINGAPORE. If there is one in the first place. Haha.
The scene where the police women surrounded Dr Chee's sister scared me.
For dear's sake, that thin woman looked physically vulnerable, can she have the ability to hurt you? Does she have the ability to tell everyone to strike? No? Because we are all so scared that we will be caught up and locked in jail?
Don't mean that she is weak in the mind.
You can tell from her eyes that she is seriously standing up for what she believes in.
Haiya, like I always say, stand up is stand up,
But the way you stand up is very very important.
Don't stand up crooked, don't tuo2 bei4.
Must stand up straight.
If not people not only think you su gu. They send you to wooden bridge.
